THE BLADE OF JEALOUSY By Henry Ong Directed by Denise Blasor CAST: Natalie Amenula, Cynthia Dane, Juan Haro, Eddie Mui, Carla Valina, Terry Woodberry. MUSICIAN/COMPOSER: Longo Chu
ADAPTED FROM THE PLAY "LA CELOSA DE SI MISMA" (JEALOUS OF HERSELF) BY TIRSO DE MOLINA (translated by Harley Erdman)
Synopsis: Dashing Melchor moves to Los Angeles to court his online dating connection but unexpectedly falls in love with a mysterious veiled lady (Magdalena) in a cathedral, and she with him. Unaware that the lady and his date are one and the same person, his reactions ignite Magdalena's jealousy--of herself! A madcap comedy of disguise and deception, Henry Ong's modern take on a 17th century Spanish play is surprisingly relevant today, in light of society's obsession with outward beauty and how it relates to self-worth.
Performances every Sunday at 7 p.m. from June 24 to August 26, 2018 at Whitefire Theatre, 13500 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423. www.whitefiretheatre.com
"Special kudos to director and costume designer Denise Blasor, who cleverly dresses the cast in an amalgam of old and new and also manages to keep the story briskly moving along. Derrick McDaniels' lighting, Longo Chu's sound, and Diana Cignoni's video design bring the narrative to life. The cast seems to be having as much fun as their contemporary characters....Laughs and pleasure are the blade's currency." Elaine Mura, Splash Mags
"Its staging takes upon many forms of comical theater. Its secret recipe? Take one part of a Shakespearean play, add a dose of a Moliere-penned farce, blend with a helping of a 1930s-era screwball comedy, attach a slice of British slapstick (i.e. a charming movie as made by Ealing Studios), top it off with a scoop of a post-modern romantic comedy (rom-com), shake well, and what one has is this production!" Rich Borowy, Accessibly Live Off-Line
"This energetic, quirky and hilarious play leaves us in no doubt of our tragic and comical similarities....The energy level is through the roof and creates a play that is a lot of fun to watch with wonderful characters and really excellent performances full of color and drama and life...The Blade of Jealousy is highly entertaining, warmly farcical and brilliantly crafted."
